An inlet tee sends wastewater from the house down into the tank instead of shooting it across the top. That lets the tank's contents separate naturally, which is how the system is meant to work.

The outlet tee connects the tank to the outlet line that carries wastewater to the distribution box or drainage area. If it breaks, solids can escape into the drainage system, so it should be repaired or replaced promptly.

The baffle wall keeps solid waste back from the liquid that flows out to the absorption field, so solids do not clog it. It is often the first part of a septic tank to deteriorate or break, and regular maintenance helps it last.
